Rising Star Liv Hanna Talks Sign It On The Line

Singer-songwriter Hanna joins us on Close-Up Culture to talk about her new song, Sign It on the Line.

Hi Liv Hanna, welcome to Close-Up Culture. Your latest song, Sign It on the Line, has a powerful message. What was the writing process like for this song?

I went to the practice rooms at University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, determined to come out with a song. I started jotting down lyrics and playing chords on the piano, and eventually, I had put together a ballad called, ‘Sign It on the Line.’

What did you want to explore through this song?

This song was originally written and recorded in the fall of 2022; however, I saved its release for a particular time. As many of you know, May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a topic that reigns of high importance to me. Having struggled myself again and again, I released this song to tell the story and bring some sort of support to those who are struggling as well. Despite the depressing and graphic lyricism, I hope this song can serve as an anthem and a reminder. We are never alone. You are so loved. I wanted to explore themes of connection, reassurance, and hope for those listeners who might be silently struggling as well.

You worked with producer PJ McGinnis on the song. Can you tell us about that collaboration and your journey to create the sound for Sign It on the Line?

Yes!! I absolutely love working with PJ McGinnis and the team at Studio 26! I came into the studio with a piano ballad, like I often do, and he brought in guitars, drums, and bass to capture that anthemic sound that I had intended. It came together quite flawlessly, and I think it was one of my favorite songs to work on in the studio!

I imagine this is a very emotional song to record and to perform. How do cope with intensity of it all?

Thankfully, I am in a much better place today than I was when I wrote and recorded this song. I now perform it with reflection and gratitude that I have made it past those hardships, and it’s so much brighter on the other side.

What impact do you hope the song has on audiences?

I hope audiences can take away feelings of hope, connection, and resilience to keep going, knowing things always get better.

What is next for you?

I hope to perform a bit in New York this summer! I also have another single being released 6/14/24 and a few more projects that I’ll be distributing throughout the summer!
