Madi K Previews Her Dance-Pop Single ‘Fantasy’

Multi-talented singer/songwriter Madi K stops by on Close-Up Culture to give us some insight into her highly-anticipated new single, ‘Fantasy’.

Your new single, Fantasy, will be released on Friday 23rd of February. How are you feeling ahead of the release?

I’m extremely excited for the release of ‘Fantasy’! I’ve had this track finished and hidden away for over a year, waiting for the right time to put it out, and I feel like now is that time. My supporters have heard snippets here and there on some live streams I’ve done, so the anticipation is super high amongst them, and I just know that everyone is going to love this track as much as I do. It’s a banger!

What was your trigger to make this song?

Dance and house music are two music genres I’m a massive fan of, and listen to quite often. Over the years, artists like Jax Jones, Tiesto and Alesso have all sparked inspiration in me to make dance-pop music, and I know that their style of music gets the crowd going, so I really wanted something of my own that people could enjoy.

After the positive feedback on one of my pervious singles ‘Hush’ (also a dance-pop track), I knew that I wanted to make more dance-pop music, but also explore elements of house music, and marry it all together. Which I think my producer and fellow songwriter on this track, Dom (Dominik Dale), and I did successfully!

From the teasers, we can tell this is going to be a hit. What can you reveal about the song and what we can expect?

The teasers are a really great indication of what to expect musically from the song, and its widely known amongst my supporters as the ‘sister track’ to ‘Hush’. Lyrically ‘Fantasy’ explores the feeling of being infatuated by someone after spending a night out with them, and the insatiable desire to be with them even when they aren’t with you physically, resorting to fantasising about them. I feel like its a feeling everyone can relate to, and coupled with a strong pulsing beat and catchy melodic bass line, it’s hard to resist bopping your head to! Haha!

What was the creative process like on Fantasy?

Similar to a few of my previous releases, the entire creative process to write and produce ‘Fantasy’ was done on one Zoom call from my bedroom. My producer Dom is based in Sydney, so we typically write via Zoom, and will spend a whole 8 hours on the same call creating the tracks. In this instance, I already knew the sound I wanted to go for, and had an extensive reference playlist to work from. We eventually finished the production of the instrumentation and melodies, and then it was time to work on lyrics (my favourite part). I had the hook already written in my notes app (I have so many lyrics in there), and slowly we put it all together.

Eventually, I got around to recording the vocals myself from home, which can be stressful because I’m a perfectionist, and I love stacking harmonies – sometimes I do too much, but producers always rein me back in. To finish it off, Dom added his finesse and voila, ‘Fantasy’ was born!

There’s a great clip online of you listening to the song with your nan, Lucy. How fun has it been to share this song with those closest to you?

It has been so fun and special to share this track with my closest friends and family. It’s always a super gratifying moment when they react in a positive way. I feel like that means I did a good job, and in a lot of ways, their approval means the most to me!

The video with my Nan, was so funny to make, and came about quite organically. She saw the initial teaser I posted on my Instagram, and insisted I play her the whole song. So, being that she was over at my house at the time, I figured I’d film her reaction, and even if I decided I didn’t want to share the moment with everyone online, at least I could keep it as a sweet memory with her. Turns out, people loved the video, and I think Nan has a few fans of her own now!

What are your hopes for Fantasy and the rest of 2024?

I hope everyone loves it! I hope they add it to their Spotify playlists, and pump it in the car so loud it almost blows a speaker, or play it at their next party, or even at the club (if they can convince the DJ to play it). 2024 is set to be a huge year of releases for me. I am working incredibly hard to put out the best work possible, and to build a catalogue of music and accompanying visual aspects I’m proud of. ‘Fantasy’ is just the beginning of what I have in store for my music in 2024, and I can’t wait to follow up this release with even more music.
