10 Short Film Directors We Can’t Wait To See Make A Feature

Close-Up Culture list 10 short film directors who are proving that the future of cinema is in excellent hands.

1. Olly Ginelli

Ginelli’s The Long Spring is one of our favourite short films of the year so far and has been a big hit on the festival circuit. We have no doubt he’ll be making hard-hitting features in the near future.

2. Louisa Connolly-Burnham

Connolly-Burnham’s The Intimacy Coordinator is one of the best shorts we’ve seen at a festival. We’re dying to see it turned into a feature or developed into a TV series.

3. Edem Kelman

Following his BAFTA-nominated short Terence – which focused on a London security guard with a gift for healing – we are excited to see him develop bigger stories.

4. Yasmin Afifi

Afifi is incredibly good at finding the awkward, funny, and uncomfortable corners of everyday life – as seen in her BAFTA-winning short Jellyfish and Lobster.

5. Luís Hindman

After winning a BIFA for his short filmmaking, Hindman is already working alongside the BFI and Film4 to develop feature ideas – we can’t wait!

6. Sophie King

King tackles the reality of navigating life after stillbirth in her latest short, Still Life. It’s a thoughtful film that proves she’s destined for big things.

A somber scene in a hospital room featuring a man standing beside a seated woman, who appears distressed, with a hospital bed in the background.

7. Michael Bruce

Bruce brought a wonderful theatrical and musical energy to his queer short film Kiloran Bay, which stars Alan Cumming and Jack Wolfe. Imagine what he could do with a feature.

8. Livvy Edwards

Edwards is busy building a dark, gothic world of vampires and folklore with Red City, and we are completely ready for her to take that creepy vibe to the big screen.

9. Camille Summers-Valli

Summers-Valli’s Untitled Woman is a striking short with serious depth. We wouldn’t be surprised if she’s one of the biggest names in directing in a few years.

10. Saoirse Ronan

Ronan has officially stepped behind the camera, impressing with her directorial and screenwriting debut, Paper Plane. Given her intelligence as an actor, and the directors she’s worked with, we’re not surprised in the slightest that she’s already a directing hit.
