I recently got together with a group of people to watch The Substance. If you know me, you know I love a theme, so decided that The Substance would also be the theme for the snacks too. If you’re wanting to do the same, below is what I did to hopefully inspire you!
For the snacks, I focused on gummy versions of elements of the film, so got gummy fried eggs, teeth and lips. I decided to order brown bags for people to create a pick n mix and added the number ‘503’ to each one. It was a fun connection to the film that got an “Ah!” when the number finally appeared on screen from those who hadn’t seen it before.
For savoury, I wanted to do something with chicken or shrimp based on what is eaten in the film, but as a vegetarian, and someone who didn’t want to do any cooking… I went for chicken flavoured crisps instead! I also tried to get prawn cocktail crisps (prawn and shrimp are basically the same, aren’t they?!), but I couldn’t seem to find any. Maybe next time!

Everyone loved the snacks, they felt like perfect cinema treats. If you want to elevate them by cooking, making a prawn cocktail, eggs on toast, feel free!
I decided on two different drinks to accompany the food. The first was simply cans of Diet Coke, which the character of Sue sips out of during one shot. Easy and enjoyed by all!
Secondly, I took sprite and apple flavouring to create a batch of ‘Activator’! Inspired by the green liquid that Demi Moore injects into her body, this fruity fizz was so tasty, and I added ‘Activator’ labels to the cups for fun.

In a dream world with more time, I’d have ordered syringes or medical style drinks bags, but the cups were an easy way to achieve a similar style.
I have wanted to rewatch The Substance since I saw it at the cinema, so it was incredibly fun to show it to a group with themed pickings, point out my references on screen, and drink the activator without actually splitting. I guess I am still one.
