At just 19, Francesca Hennessy has swiftly become a formidable name in boxing. With titles such as National Champion, Golden Girls Champion, and Women’s Winter Box Cup Champion, her meteoric rise has captured significant attention.

Fran joins us on Close-Up Culture to talk about her path into boxing, the proudest moment of her career so far, her personality outside of the ring, and much more.

Hi Fran, welcome to Close-Up Culture. What initially got you into boxing?

My family and Savannah Marshall played significant roles in getting me into boxing. As a child, I struggled with weight issues and discovered boxing as a form of cardio that I genuinely enjoyed. The physical and mental benefits were immediate and profound. Falling in love with the sport was a natural progression. Growing up, my brother was also a boxer, and I was constantly surrounded by the sport. It became an integral part of my life almost effortlessly.

What was it about the sport that hooked you in?

The feeling that boxing gives you is unparalleled—there’s an adrenaline rush and a sense of accomplishment that you can’t find in anything else. The mental aspect of boxing also captivated me. It challenges you to be resilient, disciplined, and strategic. These mental challenges can help you through tough times, providing a sense of purpose and fulfillment. From a young age, I realized that this was my passion and something I wanted to dedicate my life to.

Who were some of the most influential figures in your early years as a boxer?

  • Savannah Marshall: She has been a huge inspiration and a role model for me.
  • Michael: His support and guidance have been invaluable.
  • My Dad: Growing up, I saw my dad work as a boxing promoter. Despite his initial hesitation about his children pursuing boxing, his passion for the sport was contagious. It was through him that I fell in love with boxing.
  • Prince Naseem: I admire his style, flow, and showmanship. His unique approach to boxing has always been something I look up to and strive to emulate.

What has been your proudest career moment so far?

My professional debut stands out as my proudest moment. At a young age, I was able to make a significant impact. It was an opportunity to showcase my skills and demonstrate that I could handle the pressures of the professional arena. I also enjoyed bringing a touch of showbiz to the ring, leaving the audience with a memorable experience. It was a pivotal moment where I proved to myself and others that I belonged in the professional boxing world.

You’re very active away from the ring and show off your personality online. How much do you enjoy the entertainment aspect of what you do?

I thoroughly enjoy the entertainment side of boxing—the lights, the cameras, and the opportunity to show off my personality. It’s a chance to connect with fans and bring an extra layer of excitement to the sport. When the cameras are on, I feel in my element, and I love the buzz that comes with performing and entertaining. It adds a dynamic dimension to my career that I find incredibly fulfilling.

We see lots of big influencer boxing cards. Who would be your dream celeb opponent and why?

While my main goal is to be a world title fighter, I find the influencer boxing scene intriguing. It brings a fun and engaging element to the sport, reaching new and diverse audiences. If I had to choose a dream celebrity opponent, it would be someone who shares a genuine passion for boxing and can bring excitement to the match. Their influence could also help highlight the sport’s appeal and attract more fans.

What are some of your biggest passions away from the ring?

  • Family and Friends: Spending quality time with my loved ones is very important to me.
  • Cooking and Eating: I have a passion for culinary arts and enjoy experimenting with different recipes. Sharing meals with friends and family is one of my favorite pastimes.
  • Inspiring the Younger Generation: I take part in numerous school talks, aiming to educate and inspire young people. I want to encourage them to pursue their dreams and believe that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
  • Watching Boxing: I enjoy being a spectator and learning from other fighters. It’s refreshing to experience the sport from the other side of the ropes.

What are your ambitions for the future?

My ultimate ambition is to win a world title and become the youngest undisputed champion. I also have a strong desire to give back to the community. I want to work with schools both nationally and internationally, encouraging young girls to chase their dreams and showing them that anything is possible with dedication and hard work. By sharing my journey, I hope to inspire the next generation to break barriers and achieve their goals.
