Why I Stan: Zendaya

In this week’s edition of Why I Stan, we speak to a Zendaya fan (who wishes to remain anonymous) about their love of the popular actress.

When did you first encounter Zendaya’s work?

As a kid, I used to have Disney on the TV all the time. I loved Hannah Montana and a few other shows, until one day I saw the Shake It Up episode “Party It Up”. The show was perfect, my dream. I fell in love with the characters and immediately idolised Rocky Blue, who is played by Zendaya. Shake It Up then became the only show I watched on Disney and the only show I’d watch in general – I’m serious!

What was it about Zendaya that drew you to her?

She’s the coolest person alive. But at first, I loved her character Rocky Blue for many reasons. Best of all, I could relate to her as a ‘tall girl’ and a Taylor Lautner lover! I wanted to be her and would dress like her everyday for school. I’m not sure I should admit this, but I still copy Zendaya’s outfits for work. I wish I could afford some of her Met Gala outfits…

Zendaya has transitioned from child star on Disney to a huge hit in Hollywood blockbusters, like Spider-Man, and more adult projects, like the TV show Euphoria. What have you made of her career progression?

We’re not too far apart in age, so we’re growing up together. She’s making me so proud. At 26 years old, she’s already shown more range than most actresses do in their entire careers. She’s adorable in the Spider-Man films. And then she can go and pull off something edgy like Euphoria. And then she slays in a smaller, more dramatic film like Malcolm & Marie. She picks the best projects and brings the best out of them.

Do you own any Zendaya merch or memorabilla?

I won a signed poster from the Skake It Up days, which still has pride of place in my room. I once had a boyfriend who questioned it – he didn’t last long! I have all her music, DVDs of her shows, a bunch of T-shirts, Zendaya socks, and a life-sized cardboard cutout that hangs out next to my bed.

It’s public knowledge that Zendaya is in a romantic relationship with Spider-Man co-star, Tom Holland. Do you follow her private life?

Yes! I want to know she’s doing well and loving life, which she clearly is! Tom is the perfect match for her. He’s so cute and treats her like a queen. I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent watching videos of them. I wish there were more Tom’s in the world. Maybe they would appreciate my Zendaya cardboard cutout…

What is your favourite Zendaya performance?

Zendaya is superb in everything. Did you see her in Dune!? But I’ve enjoyed Euphoria the most because I’ve been able to see her grow with her character, Rue. Her performance on that show is at legendary status – it has to be one of the best TV show performances of all-time. I’ve cried so many times watching that show, you wouldn’t believe it.

What direction would you like to see Zendaya’s career move in?

She’ll stay classy, cool and confident. I’m along for the ride no matter what. I know she’ll win lots of Oscars, Grammys and change the world at the same time.
