Mombomb, Part 1 to Screen at Slamdance –by Dr. Laura Wilhelm, LauraWil Intercultural
Filmmaker Patricia Beckmann Wells is reinventing the fairytale genre with her ambitious series of 12 short films, the first of which is being developed into a feature film. Mombomb, Part 1 tells the story of a weaponized Girl Scout named Pez who reenacts the story of Little Red Riding Hood in an artfully digitized woods. The semi-grotesque appearance of the troupe of all-American Girl Scouts hints at a revolutionary use of storytelling traditions initiated by the Brothers Grimm in the 19th century.
”Mombomb is the story of our survival through fantasy,” says Beckmann Wells, who drew upon her own traumatic childhood experiences of being stalked by two now-convicted serial killers in her hometown of Toledo, Ohio during the 1970s. She strongly believes that young women need to equip themselves for the dangers they will face in the world. Her approach will return the original purpose of warnings for children to fairy tales, which became Disney-type entertainments as the Western world grew safer for us all. But most of us never expect to encounter serial killers!
The film, which was created by using over a dozen AI in a unique pipeline, is an official selection of Slamdance 2025, and will be screened on Friday, February 21st at 6:45 – 8:15 pm at Panasonic LUMIX Theater (1011 N. Fuller Ave. West Hollywood, CA 90046) and on Tuesday, February 25th at 7:45 – 9:00 pm at Landmark Theater 3 (8000 W Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90046) Fri, Feb 21st, 6:45 PM @ Panasonic LUMIX TheaterTue, Feb 25th, 7:45 PM @ Landmark Theater 3
The film will also be streamed on the Slamdance Channel from February 24th to March 7th, 2025. Slamdance screenings and events will run from February 20-26 at the Director’s Guild of America, Quixote West Hollywood, and additional venues.
The Mombomb series should break new ground for feminist horror films.
