Rising star Spencer Stevenson joins us on Close-Up Culture to chat about his exciting role in Hulu’s new film, Rosaline.
Spencer stars as ‘Paris,’ alongside a star-studded cast including Kaitlyn Dever and Minnie Driver, in this comedic retelling of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” that is told from the point of view of Romeo’s jilted ex, Rosaline.
Spencer, welcome to Close-Up Culture. Rosaline sounds like such a fun twist on Shakespeare’s classic. What excited you about this script and story?
I fell in love with the script the second I read it. I thought it was such an interesting and FUN take on Romeo & Juliet, I was so in! If you’re going to do Romeo & Juliet, it has to be something new and Rosaline showcases the other characters outside of Shakespeare’s R & J story which is nice to see. I’m also just such a fan of Kaitlyn and Karen.
You play Paris, Rosaline’s best friend who she ropes into her plan to break up Romeo and Juliet. Can you tell us about Paris and your experience playing him?
Aw, I had the time of my life playing Paris! I love him. He’s funny, charismatic, bold, and sassyyyyyy! I think he’s a heightened version of myself so showing up to work and practically playing dress up was incredible. Karen gave me a good amount of creative freedom with him which I appreciate so much. This is a completely different version of the character Paris we’ve ever seen and he’s just such a joy to play.
This is such an incredible cast, with yourself, Minnie Driver, Nico Hiraga, Kaitlyn Dever, and many others. How much fun did you have making this film?
This cast is SO great! Everyone’s just so genuine and good people. The talent is insane and everyone has a different comedic skill set that really shines in this film. It is an honor to be alongside such great actors. I not only had badass costars but friends too. Can’t really ask for more!
How do you like to spend your time away from the camera?
I like to go to the beach a lot. I’ll spend my time on walks or bonfire game nights there. I also really just enjoy being home a lot. At heart, I’m such a homebody. Spending time with my dog, Apollo, and just getting as much rest as I can in my little comfy apartment.
What type of roles would you love to take on in the coming years?
I’d love to do a show like Schitts creek on Hulu or White Lotus on HBO. I’d also enjoy a heavy teen drama like Euphoria on HBO or a superhero show like The Boys from Amazon. A goal of mine is to be a mutant in the MCU X-Men universe so we’ll just manifest that one!
What are your hopes and ambitions for the future?
To continue to do work and roles that are different and feel like I’m stretching my acting ability. I’m always looking to learn something new in and out of acting so to be as versatile as I can, that’s a pretty important one to me!
